I made up a hypothetical interview between the student and the tutor; however, the answers are genuine and based on my observation and experience. Please read on and let me know if you agree or disagree.
Interview
Student: How can I study IELTS during Coronavirus (or COVID-19) epidemic?
IELTS Tutor: Good news, your private tutor can prepare you both for paper-based and computer-based IELTS while you are sitting at the comfort of your home.
Student: How?
IELTS Tutor: Via Skype!
Student: Does the quality of online tutoring differs from offline (or face-to-face) tutoring?
IELTS Tutor: Actually, no and I can justify that for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening sections. Read on
Online Tutoring Quality for IELTS Writing
Skype’s screen sharing feature is a great feature especially in the writing task. The tutor can easily see the essay live via Skype and pinpoint the problems in his comprehensive feedback. I enhanced this benefit through Screen Recorder software which records anything going on in the screen. This integration of Screen Share with Screen Recorder produces priceless results and does not compromise the quality which students experience in a physical classroom environment.
Online Tutoring Quality for IELTS Reading and Listening
I use Google Drive to share the Reading resources such as IELTS Cambridge Books (scanned). The student go through the selected passages and the tutor can see the skimming and scanning strategy to locate the answers. The same is true for Listening. I personally recommend online tutoring over face-to-face tutoring as there is no need to sit beside the student or hover around to find out what difficulties the student is facing.
Online Tutoring Quality for Speaking
The Speaking section also becomes highly productive in online setting because the tutor or trainer can directly see all the expressions, record the full session through Screen Recorder and compare with other students to identify learning gaps. The student feels more comfortable in maintaining the eye contact while sticking to the main topic, later see his or her recorded video and finds areas of improvement. The online session is quite ideal for Speaking as in face-to-face sessions, the students cannot see themselves while speaking.
Final verdict
In short, online tutoring has greater advantages over offline tutoring in all sections namely Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking.
