Why Does the Tutor Assess Me?

Short Answer: To develop Students’ Focused Lesson Plans. Now I need to explain that through few reasons.

Exposure to English as a Second Language

Firstly, each student has his or her own exposure to the English language. For instance, it is obvious that students from the European countries learn English faster than those from the Asian backgrounds. Furthermore, countries who were under British rulings for some time are already familiar with this international language. If as a tutor, I do not assess the students, they complain that they already know the stuff and need to move on as they are investing time and money in gaining new skills not to recognise those they had developed already.

Identifying Learning Gaps

Secondly, the FREE ONE-HOUR TEST DRIVE SESSION (or assessment), expose the learning gaps which I can address directly to prove that the later sessions are worth investing for. For example, the Pearson Test of English (or PTE) students mostly switch from IELTS and reluctant to give the exam because they are not confident about their typing speed. I overcome this fear by saying that the examiners neither expect nor mark on your typing speed but do consider correct typing; meaning that you should not press backspace too much as you may lose marks for that. Therefore, as long as you can type (even with one finger) and write at-least 200 words in the PTE essay, you are good enough to attempt the exam.

Acquaintance with the Tutor

Thirdly, the Test Drive Session let a tutor acquaint with the student, understand the personal issues, and offer FIXED AND FLEXIBLE HOURS to join the 15 to 45 hours session depending upon the target IELTS or PTE score. The problems differ according to the students’ gender, ethnicity, marital status, education and purpose of taking the exam.

As an example, Nursing, medical science, accountancy and teaching profession students demand higher score like 8 each in Speaking and Listening and 7 each in Reading and Writing than those who want to progress in the fields of business or hospitality. Therefore, I as an IELTS and PTE Trainer do not have to prepare each student for 8 each in IELTS or 79 each in PTE. Students must prefer target score over desired score to apply for Australian visa and continue learning for their self-improvement.
